General Dynamics, a leading aerospace and defense company, disclosed a cyber breach stemming from a phishing campaign that compromised several employee benefits accounts. The unauthorized access was detected on October 10, after attackers infiltrated a third-party login portal. The cybercriminals conducted a fraudulent advertising campaign that directed General Dynamics employees to a phishing website, where victims unknowingly entered their usernames and passwords. The breach exposed sensitive personal information of 37 employees, including names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, government-issued IDs, bank account details, and disability status. Using the compromised employee benefits accounts, attackers accessed confidential personal data, in some cases altering bank account information. General Dynamics responded promptly by notifying the affected employees starting October 10, issuing formal letters to inform them of the breach. The company clarified that the unauthorized access occurred through a third-party portal, not through its internal business systems, and stated that no ongoing threat currently exists for the impacted employees. As a precaution, the affected employees were offered two years of free credit monitoring services and were advised to update their login credentials for their compromised Fidelity NetBenefits accounts. General Dynamics acted swiftly by identifying and suspending access to the affected service upon discovery of the breach on October 1. This incident is part of a broader trend, with similar breaches reported earlier in 2024, including incidents involving Fidelity, where tens of thousands of customers' personal data were exposed in separate security lapses.
