As per sources, a cyberattack on an external IT infrastructure provider for Accuro, a private health insurer in New Zealand, may have compromised the personal information of its 34,000 customers. But the Wellington-based not-for-profit insurer has not found evidence of a data breach yet. Moreover, during a statement issued on 1st December 2022, CEO Lance Walker warned of delays due to day-to-day operations and customer service being impacted by the attack, including claims processing. According to the company, it notified the New Zealand Government's Computer Emergency Response Team, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and has brought in outside cybersecurity support. However, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, Joe Benbow would not confirm or deny whether the incident was a ransomware attack. Additionally, Benbow declined to identify the third-party infrastructure provider. Furthermore, CERT NZ reported a steady increase in cyber incidents last December, including phishing and credential harvesting and malware. Based on the latest quarterly report by the government agency, New Zealanders reported $NZ3.9 million in direct losses due to cyber incidents from April to June, which is also the average quarterly loss for the last 24 months.
