Sysco, a prominent global food chain company, has officially acknowledged a network breach that occurred in early 2023. During the breach, hackers managed to infiltrate the network and successfully exfiltrate sensitive information, including customer, employee, and business data. In an internal memo sent on May 3, 2023, Sysco informed its employees that customer and supplier data in the United States and Canada, as well as personal information of U.S. employees, may have been compromised. Sysco became aware of the attack on March 5, 2023, with indications suggesting that the unauthorized access began on January 14, 2023. The hackers responsible claimed to have stolen certain data, and Sysco confirmed that the breach encompassed various company-related information related to business operations, customers, employees, and personal data. The company is actively investigating the incident in collaboration with cybersecurity experts, while also cooperating with federal law enforcement and fulfilling its obligations regarding the compromised data. Employee data compromised in the breach includes personal information submitted to Sysco for payroll purposes, such as names, social security numbers, and account numbers. In a 10-Q quarterly report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on May 2, 2023, Sysco officially disclosed the breach. According to the filing, the incident did not impact the company's business operations or customer service. Affected users were reassured that there is no existing threat to the network, as Sysco's security team has implemented additional safeguards to prevent similar breaches from occurring in the future.
