Description

The State Bar of Texas has confirmed a data breach that took place between January 28 and February 9, 2025, following the discovery of unauthorized activity on its network. The breach was detected on February 12, 2025, prompting an immediate investigation with the assistance of third-party forensic experts to assess the extent of the incident and secure affected systems. Findings revealed that an unauthorized individual gained access to sensitive personal information, including names and other personally identifiable information (PII). While there is currently no confirmed evidence of misuse or fraudulent activity linked to the exposed data, impacted individuals are being notified through written communication and encouraged to stay vigilant. In response to the breach, the State Bar of Texas has enhanced its cybersecurity infrastructure and is reviewing its data privacy policies to prevent similar incidents in the future. To assist those affected, the organization is offering free credit monitoring services through Experian, which include identity restoration support, credit monitoring, and identity theft insurance coverage of up to $1 million. Impacted individuals can enroll in these services at no cost using a unique code provided in their notification letters, with a deadline of July 31, 2025 for registration. The monitoring service is designed to help detect and address potential fraud, and individuals are advised to regularly check their financial accounts and credit reports for any unusual activity over the next 12 to 24 months. To further protect personal data, the State Bar of Texas recommends additional security measures, such as placing fraud alerts on credit files, freezing credit reports to limit unauthorized access, and carefully reviewing financial statements and annual credit reports. The organization has also reported the breach to regulatory authorities and established a dedicated support line for affected individuals seeking guidance. This incident underscores the ongoing risks associated with cyber threats and highlights the importance of robust security measures to protect sensitive data. The breach serves as a reminder for individuals to proactively monitor their personal information and respond swiftly to potential security threats.
