Sniffnet is a free, open-source network monitoring tool designed for effortless Internet traffic tracking. What sets Sniffnet apart is its strong emphasis on user experience, ensuring accessibility for everyone, regardless of technical expertise. Giuliano Bellini, the creator of Sniffnet, explains, “Sniffnet stands out due to its rare combination of a GUI application entirely developed in Rust and its user-friendly interface. Unlike traditional network analyzers intended for network administrators, Sniffnet aims to be easily usable by beginners.” Key features of Sniffnet include: Selection of a network adapter for inspection. Application of filters to observed traffic. Viewing statistics and real-time traffic intensity charts. Network monitoring even when minimized. Exporting comprehensive capture reports as PCAP files. Identification of over 6000 upper layer services, protocols, Trojans, and worms. Discovering domain names and ASNs of traffic hosts. Identifying local network connections. Geolocating remote hosts. Saving favorite network hosts. Real-time inspection of network connections. Custom notifications for specific network events. Customizable themes for user interface preferences. Sniffnet integrates MMDB databases, specifically IP to country and IP to ASN databases, using the free version of MaxMind GeoLite2. Users can also incorporate their own MMDB files. Future updates will introduce features like malicious traffic detection, PCAP file import, firewall capabilities, remote host monitoring, and a web interface. Sniffnet is available for free on GitHub and supports Linux, Windows, and macOS.
