On January 9, 2025, Proton, a Swiss technology company known for its privacy-centric online services, faced a significant service disruption impacting multiple platforms, including Proton VPN, Proton Mail, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton Wallet. The outage, which began around 10:00 AM ET, left many users unable to access their accounts. For example, Proton Mail users encountered error messages stating the page could not load, along with prompts to refresh the page or check their internet connection. Within approximately two hours, services were gradually restored, with Proton Mail and Proton Calendar being the last to regain full functionality. According to an incident report from Proton, the disruption resulted from a software update conducted as part of an ongoing transition to Kubernetes. The update introduced a limitation on the number of new connections to the company’s database servers. This issue, coupled with a sudden surge in user activity around 4:00 PM Zurich time, caused the system to become overwhelmed. While Proton VPN, Proton Pass, Proton Drive, and Proton Wallet were restored relatively quickly, Proton Mail and Proton Calendar experienced extended outages, with nearly half of user requests failing during the incident. Proton further explained that despite having sufficient server capacity to manage the spike in connections, the simultaneous operation of two infrastructures during the migration complicated load balancing. This led to intermittent service availability. Performance began to stabilize in the second hour of the outage, with all systems returning to normal after about four hours in total. The company reassured its users that the issue has been resolved and all services are now operating as expected. Proton is closely monitoring its systems to prevent further disruptions and ensure continued service reliability.
