The pro-Ukraine hacktivist group "Blackjack" has claimed responsibility for a cyberattack against the Russian internet services provider M9com, citing retaliation for a recent attack on Ukraine's largest telecommunications service provider, Kyivstar. In mid-December 2023, Kyivstar experienced severe disruptions, later revealed to be orchestrated by Russian hackers who had initially breached the system in May 2023. The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) discovered that Russian hackers meticulously planned the December attack, resulting in the simultaneous wiping of numerous virtual servers and computers. In response, Blackjack announced on Telegram in early January 2023 that they successfully breached M9com, disrupting its internet services and pilfering confidential data. The hacktivist group shared a Tor URL containing three ZIP archives with images purportedly proving their access to M9com's systems, along with texts containing employee and customer account credentials, and 50GB of call data. Leaked text files included sensitive information like full names, usernames, email addresses, and cleartext passwords. Blackjack also reportedly defaced M9com's official website. The group's public message indicates that this attack is the first of many planned in response to the Kyivstar incident. Unlike typical pro-Russian hacktivist attacks that focus on service disruption, Blackjack's actions have a more profound impact, as recovery from wiped servers becomes significantly challenging, especially if backups are also compromised. Ukrinform, citing a source from Ukraine's law enforcement agencies, suggests that Blackjack may be linked to the Security Service of Ukraine and estimates around 20 terabytes of data were deleted during the attack. The escalating cyber tit-for-tat underscores the heightened tensions in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
