Description

As per sources, NCR, an American software and technology consulting company, is experiencing outages on its Aloha point of sale platform due to BlackCat/ALPHV ransomware attack. NCR is a leading provider of digital banking, point-of-sale systems, and payment processing solutions for restaurants, businesses, and retailers. The Aloha POS platform, one of the NCR products used in hospitality, has been down since April 12th, 2023, making customers unable to access it. Moreover, NCR revealed on April 15th, 2023, that the outage was caused by a ransomware attack on the Aloha POS platform's data centers affecting a limited number of Aloha applications. Following the discovery of this development, NCR contacted its customers, engaged third-party cybersecurity experts, and launched an investigation. In addition, the company also informed the law enforcement. However, even though NCR stated that only limited number of customers are impacted by the outage, Aloha POS customers have expressed concerns about significant issues in their business operations. Furthermore, security researcher Dominic Alivieri discovered a short-lived post on the BlackCat/ALPHV ransomware gang's data leak site that claimed responsibility for NCR's attack. During the negotiation chat between an alleged NCR representative and the ransomware gang NCR was informed that they had not stolen any data stored on server during the attack. However, the threat actors claimed they had stolen credentials for NCR's customers and threatened to publish them if a ransom wasn't paid. The post has been taken down from BlackCat's data leak site, likely in hopes that the NCR would be willing to negotiate a ransom.
