According to SlashNext, a newly developed generative AI cybercrime tool called WormGPT is being advertised on hacking platforms for sophisticated phishing and business email compromise (BEC) attacks. Security researcher Daniel Kelly has noted that this tool is positioned as a blackhat alternative to GPT models, specifically designed for malicious purposes. By automating the phishing email process, hackers can enhance the success rate of their attacks. The tool's creator describes it as a formidable adversary to ChatGPT, emphasizing its potential for engaging in illegal activities. The existence of such tools in the hands of malicious actors is highly concerning, particularly as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's BARD are actively working to mitigate the abuse of large language models in generating convincing phishing emails and malicious code. In February 2023, an Israeli cybersecurity firm exposed how attackers are bypassing ChatGPT's restrictions by leveraging its API. They trade stolen premium accounts and sell brute-force software designed to compromise ChatGPT accounts using credential lists. Threat actors are promoting "jailbreaks" for ChatGPT, which involve specialized prompts and inputs crafted to manipulate the tool into generating outputs that involve disclosing sensitive information, producing inappropriate content, or executing malicious code. Generative AI enables the creation of emails without grammatical errors, making them appear legitimate and reducing the chances of being identified as malicious. This accessibility to generative AI empowers threat actors with limited skills, widening the potential pool of malicious actors.
