A Virginia-based dental services provider, Delta Dental of Virginia (DDVA), has begun notifying approximately 146,000 individuals that their personal and health information was exposed in a recent data breach. According to a notification sent to affected individuals and filed with the Maine Attorney General’s Office, the incident stemmed from a compromised email account within the organization. DDVA reported that an unauthorized party gained access to the mailbox between March 21 and April 23 and may have removed emails and attachments containing patient information. The data involved includes names, Social Security numbers, details from government-issued identification, and other forms of protected health information. Following an investigation carried out with independent cybersecurity specialists, DDVA confirmed that 145,918 individuals were impacted. The organization emphasized that it has not found any evidence indicating that the exposed information has been misused. To assist those whose Social Security numbers or driver’s license details were affected, DDVA is providing one year of complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services. Based in Roanoke, the not-for-profit insurer offers dental and vision plans for families and individuals and also operates the Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation, which supports initiatives aimed at improving oral health throughout the state.
