Description

Connex Credit Union, one of Connecticut’s largest credit unions with over 70,000 members and more than \$1 billion in assets, has reported a significant data breach affecting approximately 172,000 individuals. The breach was discovered on June 3, 2025, and investigations revealed that cybercriminals had access to Connex’s systems for a brief window between June 2 and June 3. While the company has not confirmed exactly how the breach occurred, it is currently unknown whether it involved ransomware or who was responsible for the intrusion. According to a notification letter filed with the Maine Attorney General’s Office, the compromised files may have contained sensitive personal information. This includes names, account numbers, debit card information, Social Security numbers, and government-issued identification used during account setup. Although this data may have been accessed or downloaded by the attackers, Connex emphasized that there is no evidence at this time of unauthorized access to member accounts or any financial losses. In response to the incident, Connex has issued alerts on its website warning customers about scam calls and text messages from individuals impersonating Connex employees. These fraudulent messages attempt to obtain sensitive details such as PINs, passwords, and account numbers. While it's unclear whether these scams are directly linked to the breach, customers are advised to remain cautious and avoid sharing personal information. The breach raises concerns about the growing trend of cyberattacks targeting financial institutions. Connex has not disclosed the full scope of the breach or whether it has received any demands from the attackers. The investigation remains ongoing, and the company is working with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts to assess the impact and prevent further incidents.
